Lana Del Rey Talks New Album ‘Lust For Life’ on The Kevin & Bean Show

She also talks about collaborating with Stevie Nicks on new album

Lana Del Rey stopped by The Kevin & Bean Show this morning to talk about her new album Lust For Life, collaborating with Stevie Nicks, and answered a few questions from her fans. Her fans are undeniably passionate – Bean pointed out that they were among the first to arrive at KROQ Weenie Roast earlier this year and always turn out in droves for her everywhere she goes. “They do show up for me. I’m so lucky like that. No matter where I go they show up to the shows.”

How does Lana handle her fans telling her that her music saved their life?

“It’s a big thing. I absorb it and I keep it. I take it in but I keep it light. I try and take the lightness from it. Music was a big part of my life when I was a teenager too, not that they’re all teenagers,” she says.

Lana’s latest album Lust For Life includes a few special guests, including the legendary Stevie Nicks. Bean asked if Lana was phased at all during the recording process with Stevie and whether or not she was able to treat her like just another performer. “Not at the time. Not when she came into the studio. I was more nervous than I thought I would be when she came in,” she says.

After the recording process was over, Lana and Stevie continued to be friends. “I could totally call her. I have to say it’s one of these amazing career and life things where I do consider her a friend and I love her. You never really know with women how it’s going to go, but she just wanted to be there right away. She sent flowers after the track was done, got me a present for my birthday… it’s funny because she’s the one who’s so legendary but she’s the one who really put all the extra effort in and didn’t make anything hard clearance-wise.”

“We both have a flair for the dramatic. I saw her on stage with Fleetwood Mac last week at Dodger Stadium and she definitely has a way about her on stage. I’m not saying that I have that same way but you can tell she’s a bit of a mystic at heart, I would say. I’ve had a long-time interest in all things ancient and occult like so many people. I guess I draw on a little bit of that inspiration for my music and for whatever. I love to read up on stuff like that… so yeah, the two witches got together.”

The conversation returned to Lana’s latest album Lust For Life, which was released July 21st via Interscope Records. Bean asked how this album differed from her previous ones.

“It felt different. I was glad that the general vibe of it didn’t end up being too different from the first few records I did,” says Lana. “The melodies and the production were just following what I had been thinking about for the last year and a half. I thought I knew where the record was going and then 14 months into it, it took a turn for me stylistically so I wasn’t really sure where I was going to end up. But I really love it, I’ve got a couple of songs on there like ‘Coachella’ that I love the production for or a song called ‘Cherry’ – again I love the kind of bluesy vibe and the production, so I’m happy with where it went.”

Lana Del Rey is performing two sold out shows in So Cal this week – the first is tonight in San Diego and the second at House of Blues Anaheim tomorrow.

Lust For Life is available now.
