A little while back IMAX soft opened their brand new VR facility, the first of it’s kind, across the street from the Grove in Los Angeles. There you can choose from a variety of VR experiences ranging from a first-person shooter, boxing, tight rope walking, and much, much more.
We brought Kat Corbett to a special media preview of the space and got the chance to talk with Robert Lister, IMAX’s chief business development officer. “I want people to see the potential of this new, incredible platform. VR has the ability to draw you in, immerse you, put you inside a whole new virtual world. It still has a ways to go before it turns into this incredible entertainment platform that it can be… I want people to see the potential of that in the games we have here,” he says.
Instead of focusing on 360 video, the space relies on CGI worlds and interactive experiences. They also utilize products like the D-BOX chair to provide a sense of motion and SUBPACs to enhance the physical senses.
IMAX plans to open several more centers like this around the world. If you don’t want to purchase VR equipment but want an affordable way to experience it yourself, this place is definitely worth checking out. You can buy single experiences, or as Lister puts it, “you can do an all-you-can-eat where you do a whole bunch of games.”
