The Neighbourhood Announce That RiFF RaFF Is Part Of Their Band
The Neighbourhood’s Jesse Rutherford announced to the audience at KROQ’s 24th Annual Almost Acoustic Christmas performance tonight (December 8) that RiFF Raff (also known as Jody Highroller) is officially a part of the Los Angeles-based band.
According to the pair, they’ve been planning on breaking the news for over a month–specifically at Almost Acoustic Christmas. Rutherford said: “KROQ needed to get the news first. They treated us so well.”
During an exclusive interview after The Neighbourhood’s performance, the pair said that they met a few years ago while playing basketball at a park in Los Angeles.
“We didn’t even meet on a music tip,” said RiFF Raff. “We just kinda vibed out, kickin’ it. And then we were friends. And the next thing you know, I’m doing music; he’s doing music. Then he had that “Sweater Weather” thing and they blew up. And I’m still doing music and we still kick it, so why not do songs together?”
They called their teaming up an “evolution” and a “connection.” Rutherford said that RiFF RaFF “gives some contrast to The Neighbourhood” while RiFF RaFF agreed that Rutherford has a certain swagger and that, together, they want to create a new genre they called “Neon Rock.” As RiFF RaFF described, “it’s like black lights” and he comes in with the neon element.
“It’s kinda like he’s a rock star,” said RiFF RaFF of Rutherford. “He’s an 80’s rock star and I’ve been an 80’s rock star. So it’s like we’re bringing that rock star lifestyle back.”
When asked to describe what The Neighbourhood paired with RiFF RaFF will sound like, Rutherford said the sound was for “strip clubs in space.”
