Fearless Records has assembled what could be the most interesting cover album this year. Hitting stores November 6th is the latest edition of Punk Goes Pop #5.
Although it can be debated if the bands are actually punk, we can all agree that their covers are 100% harder than the originals. Among the hard rock covers in the edition are Gotye‘s “Somebody That I Used To Know,” Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe,” fun’s “Some Nights,” and Justin Beiber’s “Boyfriend.”
Forever The Sickest Kids have given us a first listen to their exclusive track. The Dallas, TX foursome recorded their take on Rihanna’s massive club banger “We Found Love.” Surprisingly, the band was able to keep the dance feel while weaving in their trademark metal guitars and menacing vocals (scroll to 2:50).
“We love doing cover songs for the Punk Goes compilations,” confesses drummer Kyle Burns to CBS Local. “It’s a time for us to get crazy without being worried about stepping out of our comfort zones, because they aren’t our songs.”
Why did the band choose this particular track? Burns explains its popularity had a lot to do with the decision. “It’s a popular song that I think everyone has heard 1,000,678,063 times. So we thought it would be fun to mix it up a bit.” Surprisingly, the band likes the pop princess with Burns confessing “Yeah, we like Rihanna, even though it took me two months to learn how to correctly spell her name.”
After recording the song for the album, the band has grown fond of the track, admitting they may consider playing it live on concert. Burns explains, “We have to polish the screaming part live though, maybe just sing it normal and run it through mega distortion pedals.”
