Don’t call it a comeback. Despite a “dark cloud on the horizon” of surrounding rumors about their past extended hiatus, The Killers have pushed through and say that they took a break in order to slow down after seven years of constant touring.
For The Killers, the name of their recently released album, Battle Born is more than just a nod to the state flag of their native Nevada. It is a testament to the tenacious spirit of a band who rebelled against judgement and eventually came together to make music at their home studio; also named Battle Born.
Because, according to Brandon Flowers, someone has to make good rock music to compete with the current radio inundation of hip-hop and dance music. It might as well be The Killers.
Frontman Flowers and drummer Ronnie Vannucci, Jr. joined Kevin & Bean for an interview and Flowers was asked about recent statements he made denouncing the current state of guitar bands.
The sometimes-controversial singer stayed diplomatic, saying that it’s not surprising that people are into DJs and dance music right now and even admitted being a fan of New Order and Depeche Mode when he was growing up.
“I don’t necessarily think there’s a lack of rock bands,” Flowers explained. “I think we’re not writing good enough songs. I don’t think that it’s competing with that stuff, I guess. But when a rock song is great, no DJ can capture that feeling. I guess that’s my point.”
Vannucci agreed, saying that he feels most sorry for young bands and said The Killers got lucky to get their “foot in the door” and a “fanbase.”
“If you’re a young band coming right,” continued Vannucci. “And you were raised on the Rolling Stones er even Nirvana… there’s not a home for you right now. It seems like it’s difficult to get in.”
