With their musical contribution to the London 2012 Olympic Games, Muse has what could be the broadest audience ever, anticipating their next move.

That next move will come in the form of “Madness,” the first official single from their forthcoming album, The 2nd Law.

“I wrote that song having a fight with my girlfriend,” confesses frontman Matt Bellamy in an interview with KROQ Los Angeles’ Stryker. “Nothing particularly over the top but just having one of those moments where she leaves you for the day to think about it. I rarely write songs that catharticly. All I had was a drum machine and a synthesizer so I just put this very minimal thing together.

“I wasn’t quite sure it would work with the band but when we started the album I showed it to Dom and Chris and they loved it. They sort of took it to another level by adding these extra parts at the end and it became a much bigger song.”

Despite an early release of two tracks, “Survival” and “Unsustainable,” the band chose to stick with the original plan of releasing “Madness” as The 2nd’s Law’s first official single.

“It’s a real surprise song for this album. It’s probably my favorite song that I’ve ever written.”

“Madness” will be released worldwide Monday, August 20th at 11:30AM PT/2:30PM ET.

The 2nd Law is set for release October 2nd and is available for pre-order in 3 forms; 12″ Vinyl, Digital and Deluxe Box Set via Warner Bros. Records.
