Today is the 8th Annual International Surfing Day, and the KROQ crew was up and at it bright and early this morning to take part.
According to Surfline.com, the Surfrider Foundation (one of the beneficiaries of the KROQ Weenie Roast) just announced that the California State Assembly passed House Resolution No. 30; a resolution that recognizes International Surfing Day as a way to “celebrate California’s surfing heritage and raise awareness about the need to protect our oceans, waves and beaches.”
Brad (who does the KROQ commercials), Jay (the KROQ fix-it guy) and myself met at the Venice Pier this morning to catch a few waves before heading in to the Roq. To our surprise, we ran into Skip Engblom, one of the founders of the Zephyr Surf and Skate Teams (who were also known as the legendary Z-Boys) and chatted with him about surfing and International Surfing Day.
Assembly member Das Williams (D-Santa Barbara), an avid surfer, introduced the resolution to commemorate the 8th annual celebration of International Surfing Day on June 20th.
“I’d wake up, go surfing to start the day, take my shower at the beach showers and then step into society,” said Williams. “At that time in my life is when I began to see the beach and our beautiful coastline as the great equalizer in the community — we can all enjoy it. That helped sure up my passion to fight to protect that equalizer.”
A few of the KROQ employees were also a part of the Bro-Am down in San Diego this past weekend with Switchfoot, Rob Machado and more.
