Today marks the release of Canadian alt-rock band Metric‘s fifth studio album, Synthetica. To celebrate, the band debuted the video for the first single, “Youth Without Youth.”

Frontwoman Emily Haines said of the album, it “sounds like the culmination of everything we have done. We’ve always had a sound in our heads that we hoped to realize and we finally heard it coming back out of the speakers this time.”

From the album art, which features a picture within a picture, to the mysterious studio video clips to the website’s word hunt, Metric on task to get its audience thinking deeper. The video for “Youth Without Youth” highlights various symbols designed to be deciphered: a bunny, dual flames, black monolith, birthday cakes, a mountain of used tires. What does it all mean?

Haines gives some insight into the album’s deeper meaning, “Synthetica is about staying home and wanting to crawl out of your skin from the lack of external stimulation… about forcing yourself to confront what you see in the mirror… about being able to identify the original in a long line of reproductions. It’s about what is real vs what is artificial.”

If George Orwell and Stanley Kubrick were alive to form a female-fronted rock band, it may sound a lot like Metric.
