Last week Alex Ebert aka Edward Sharpe led his 13 piece band through an energetic set of communal, organic music at the Riv in Chicago. Their set was reminiscent of the some of the package tours of the 50s and 60s, with multiple singers taking the lead. Featuring an amazing array of instrumentation from trumpet to cello and songs that began and ended as hand clapping chants with the rapt audience following every nuance. Earlier that afternoon, the troupe played a tantalizing thirty minute set that included past hits, “40 Day Dream,” their radio hit “Home,” and new song “That’s What’s Up” available on their latest album.
Looking like a hippie revival preacher, Ebert sat down with WXRT host Marty Lennartz to talk about the new album, Here and about how “Home” has become a universal go-to song for advertising, movies and weddings.
