Echo And The Bunnymen’s Will Sergeant Bringing His “My Own Worst Enemy” Art Show To Substrate Gallery In Los Angeles

Melling, England-born Will Sergeant is best known as the guitarist in iconic post-punk Liverpool rock band, Echo and the Bunnymen.

A band famous for their detached, brooding mix of psychedelia and minimalist punk, Echo and the Bunnymen were the godfathers of post-punk with songs like “The Killing Moon” and “Lips Like Sugar” inspiring bands of all generations. Sergeant was celebrated for his inventive, experimental guitar work that was more stylish than brash.

His artwork shares that same energy in his “My Own Worst Enemy” art show. Coming off a successful exhibition at the Penny Lane Gallery in Liverpool and a few pieces at the Mr. Brainwash show in Los Angeles, Sergeant has brought over more of his abstracts, collages, and screen prints for his first major United States art exhibition at the Substrate Fine Arts Gallery.

“All of the works mean something to me and have a story behind them. Some of them are tied to events that have taken place on tour or by situations I have found myself in,” said Sergeant who uses the same skills with his art that he applies to music.

“It has always been a mystical process and I still don’t understand where it comes from,” explained Sergeant. “I begin sometimes with the most vague idea of where I would want to go with the music. I have found if you have a strict plan it never ends up as you have imagined. And, as with the music, the paintings create their own path and they just lead me down it.”
