Jack White has already sent a song via balloon into the atmosphere; what’s stopping him from playing a vinyl track in space? It would be the perfect way to celebrate White’s rocket to the top of the charts with his first number one album, solo début Blunderbuss.
In an interview with astronaut Buzz Aldrin in Interview magazine, White talked to the second-ever person on the moon about a “secret project” that he’s working on to get one of the songs on his Third Man Records label to be the “first vinyl record played in outer space.”
White said in an interview with Buzz Aldrin that he wants “to launch a balloon that carries a vinyl record player.”
“And figure out a way to drop the needle with all that turbulence up there and ensure that it will still play,” continued White.
White also talked to Aldrin about how he didn’t want to work on solo material if he was still in the White Stripes.
“I didn’t want to go out and make solo records if the White Stripes still existed,” White elaborated. “I thought that people would be too confused by the two ideas and a lot of people wouldn’t be able to get their head around it. So, in a sense, it was something that was bound to happen one day. But I’m sad about it all the time.”
In an earlier New York Times interview, White said that his White Stripes bandmate, Meg White, was the catalyst behind the band’s break-up.
“Some people can live their whole lives in limbo,” White explained. “I’d rather cut the lifeline so we can move on with our lives. There came a point where I said, ‘If we’re not doing this, we need to put an end to it right now.’ And that’s what she wanted to do.”
