Most widely known for their 2008 international smash single “Help I’m Alive,” the Canadian foursome known as Metric revealed the title and release date for their latest full-length album. Titled Synthetica, the album is said to focus on “strong beats and futuristic, yet organic sounds.”
In a letter posted on the band’s website, singer and front woman Emily Haines said “Synthetica is about staying home and wanting to crawl out of your skin from the lack of external stimulation…about forcing yourself to confront what you see in the mirror… about being able to identify the original in a long line of reproductions. It’s about what is real vs what is artificial.”
According to guitarist James Shaw, the first sound on the album is a pulsating, grimy throb. “That sound is the foundation of the album. Oddly enough, it’s actually not a synthesizer. It’s a ’60s organ played through a homemade pedal dreamed up by a local wizard who posted an ad on Craiglist.”
The album’s first single “Youth Without Youth” will be released on May 8th and the band is scheduled to play Sasquatch! Music Festival in May.

“When I wrote the song “Help I’m Alive,” I had no idea how many people would relate to the way I was feeling.” Haines explains, “I put it out there as a personal statement and ended up finding out that a lot of people understood where I was coming from for the first time.”
