SXSW 2012: The First 36 Hours
I’ve made my annual pilgrimage to the SXSW music festival in Austin, Texas where industry insiders check out new bands and see some old favorites.
So far I’ve gone through 50lbs of BBQ 100,000 cocktails and seen bands like Alabama Shakes, Waters, Dan Deacon, Tennis and Lionel Richie. No, that is not a typo, Lionel mutha-f’n Richie rocked the city at midnight and it was AWESOME. The dude brought the hits and Kenny Rogers and all his plastic surgery made an appearance to sing “Lady” with Lionel. Don’t mock me. That room was packed with hipsters and lots of white people dancing like Elaine on Seinfeld.
This morning I awoke to find I had won a ticket to see Bruce Springsteen in the SXSW lottery. I am totally winning.

Carson Daly welcoming crowd and introducing Tennis.
Tennis playing at Carson Daly’s showcase.
Getting my fill of indie rock with Waters.
A packed house for Alabama Shakes at Stubbs. Former postal worker turned rock star, fronts this band with a whole lotta soul.
Sheep Dogs from Canada. Selected by Rolling Stone for the cover of the unsigned band contest last summer.
Rickshaw home after a night of excess.
