Earlier this summer, there was a lot of hype about Bay Area rapper Kreayshawn’s involvement in the new [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Red Hot Chili Peppers[/lastfm] music video for Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie.
In July, the buzz was that the former Berkeley Digital Film Institute student was directing the music video. So when the official video premiere was posted, I was surprised with how it looked. I was expecting something with more of a plot, and frankly something a little more “kreative.” Rumor has it, the band went in a different direction and her entire video was scrapped.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with Kreayshawn, below is the music video for her song, Gucci Gucci.
So, what did Kreayshawn’s version of Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie look like? A source from StadiumArcadium.com describes Kreayshawn’s music video plot in detail.
It’s set it in an early ’90s underground club, where RHCP is playing. Melanee E. Nelson plays the “it” scene-girl and cuts in line to the venue. There’s geeky looking guy, Shawn (the male lead), standing in line who sees her cut and gets annoyed, but is also intrigued.
Inside, the two cross paths. She lip syncs part of the song and gets him to take a sip of her drink, then kisses him. But the drink is laced with some sort of drug. For the rest of the video he’s followed around in a daze, watching the band play, seeing a goat, until he hallucinates the rain scene inside the club. According to Melanee, there was going to be some type animation to enhance Shawn’s “trip.” Then, he and Melanee make out and he ends up on the floor. The video ends with paramedics carrying him out on a stretcher to put him into an ambulance.
More details on Page 2.
In addition to the band playing on stage in the club, each RHCP member also plays a character in the plot. Chad plays the club bouncer in mirrored aviator sunglasses and a wig; Flea plays the bartender in sunglasses and an afro wig; Ant rocks a ’90s-style wig, big eyeglasses and his new mustache; and Josh plays one of the paramedics.
The video that did premier was directed by Marc Klasfeld, who’s directed over 200 music videos for artists like Katy Perry, Jay-Z, Kid Rock, Foo Fighters, Jewel, Sum 41, Avril Lavigne, with multiple MTV award wins and nominations. The RHCP video was filmed at an impromptu rooftop performance in Venice Beach, California.
It seems like this version was maybe a safer and faster option for the band. Which version do you think you’d like better? Share you thoughts.
