Music fans from around the Bay Area and across the country gathered in foggy San Francisco for day 1 of the Outside Lands Music Festival. The eclectic first day lineup left no genre untouched and no music fan unsatisfied (that is, unless you were looking forward to [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Big Boi[/lastfm], who failed to perform).
Bands like [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Foster The People[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]MGMT[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Phish[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]The Joy Formidable [/lastfm]and tons more performed on four different stages in the middle of Golden Gate Park.
One thing was apparent on day one of Outside Lands: girl power is alive and well. Female-led bands like [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Phantogram[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Best Coast[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]The Joy Formidable[/lastfm] delivered hard-hitting performances that proved women can rock just as hard as men.
Female emcee [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]K.Flay[/lastfm] offered up some local flavor as Outside Lands opened its gates and welcomed festival goers into Golden Gate Park. The Bay Area-based rapper has built some major buzz with her original material and remixes of major hits, including [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Kreayshawn[/lastfm]‘s viral hit “Gucci, Gucci” and the [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Gossip[/lastfm]‘s “Heavy Cross.” If there’s anyone on the OSL lineup destined for a major breakthrough, it’s K.Flay.
London-based band [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]The Joy Formidable[/lastfm] rocked the crowd early on in the day. Roars from the crowd visibly fueled lead singer Ritzy Bryan’s intense and soulful vocals. The trio’s set packed a punch with current hit “Whirring” and fan faves like ”I Don’t Want to See You Like This.”
British Indie-pop “it” girl [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Ellie Goulding[/lastfm] drew the most noticeable fanfare of the day. The singer-songwriter’s adoring fans came wielding giant signs that cleverly read “Goulding Gate Park” and sported specialized Ellie Goulding star-shaped sunglasses. Goulding proved why she’s deserving of all the attention surrounding her with flawless delivery of tracks like “Lights” and “Starry Eyed.”
