Today’s KROQ Flashback: Klaus Nomi “Total Eclipse”

kn Todays KROQ Flashback: Klaus Nomi Total Eclipse

With the possible exception of Rodney on the Roq’s Halloween classic ‘Skeletons’ by The Inflatable Boy Clams and KROQer Vinnie’s recent suggestion of ‘Kinko The Kid Loving Clown’ by [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Ogden Edsl[/lastfm] (which I will get to one day, my friend), this has got to be one of the weirdest and oddest of all KROQ flashbacks. If someone thinks, oh, say ‘Detachable Penis’ is the strangest thing they’ve heard then, clearly, they do not know this classically trained Super Freak – Mr. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Klaus Nomi[/lastfm] (who is no longer here on the planet with us).

I first ran into Klaus via 1981’s “Urgh! A Music War!” (in the top 10 of all punk rock movies ever and still fairly difficult to come by on DVD) and from the moment he began belting out the classic lyrics in this song about trying to get through the day on the day they world was coming to an abrupt end (“If someone calls we’re all out turning into French fries”) I knew I was in. Here’s that very clip now!

  • Vinnie

Niiiiiice. I would have never remembered this one on my own. Yet it was familiar once it wiggled its way through my tympanic membrane.

In looking around on the “world wide web” (as the kids these days call it), I found this:
-Klaus as a backup singer for Mr. Bowie in an SNL appearance from before YOU were born. Why should YOU check this clip? Well it’s a damn fine song, and you’re already familiar with it from a small Seattle band called Nirvana covering “The Man Who Sold The World” – oh yeah, and Klaus is awesomeweird as ever, even in a backup role.

“Kinko the Kid Loving Clown” should be on all your mix tapes, err, on your iPod. (Spacin’) Scott Mason will ensure the technical capability of your music equipment to handle its awesomeness. Also of interest from Ogden is “Dead Puppies” -a staple on (former KROQ/KPPC joq) Dr. Demento’s program.
