My Top 10 Albums Of 2009

Narrowing down a whole musical year to only ten albums is crazy hard (that’s what she said) but I tried. I feel like a leper being the only guy in America not putting Animal Collective on my list but I just didn’t feel them like everyone else. Here are ten that I am proud to stand up for though.

#10 AFI Crash Love

afi crash love My Top 10 Albums Of 2009

I hear their lyrics are deep and meaningful and stuff but I just know their songs sound great. You can hear the passion in Davey’s wail. Best played loud.

#9. The Avett Brothers  I And Love And You

avett bros i and love and you My Top 10 Albums Of 2009

Acoustic rock in the folk tradition with stunning family harmony to boot. Magnificently produced by the great Rick Rubin too!

#8 Dengue Fever  Sleepwalking Through The Mekong

dengue fever sleepwalking My Top 10 Albums Of 2009

A band that combines two of my favorite things: Asians and psychedelic music. Captivating.

#7  The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart (Self-titled

pains of being pure My Top 10 Albums Of 2009

If you weren’t around for My Bloody Valentine  in the 80s then here’s a fuzzier, poppier version of what you missed. Recommended if you like Silversun Pickups.

#6 Modest Mouse  No One’s First And You’re Next

modest mouse My Top 10 Albums Of 2009

This EP from the perpetually underrated band was “just” a grab bag of b-sides and songs that didn’t make the last two albums. Wow, have they got talent to burn then because this is 33 satisfying minutes.

#5 The Antlers Hospice

antlers My Top 10 Albums Of 2009

Beautiful, atmospheric, haunting, emotional, fragile…if that’s your style, this is for you. Trust me.

#4 Jay-Z The Blueprint 3

jay z My Top 10 Albums Of 2009

Pick any three songs off of here and they would be the best three songs on any other’s rapper’s album this year. Still the best in the game.

#3 Muse The Resistance”

muse My Top 10 Albums Of 2009

A sophisticated, adventurous, showstopper of a record. The only thing more astonishing about how far they’ve come in the last ten years is thinking about where they might go next.

#2 White Lies To Lose My Life

white lies My Top 10 Albums Of 2009

Big in Europe where they’ve always appreciated indie rock music you can dance to. If you’ve ever loved a Joy Division song, buy this now. Recommended if you like Interpol or Editors.

#1 Various Artists Dark Was The Night

dark was the night My Top 10 Albums Of 2009

The record I listened to easily more than any other in 2009. It’s a compilation album with proceeds benefiting the fight against AIDS. That’s just the dessert; the meat is 20 (!) songs from some of the best artists out there, like Arcade Fire, Grizzly Bear, Conor Oberst, Bon Iver, and Dirty Projectors. Please enjoy.

Happy New Year. Can’t wait to see what 2010 brings.

My #1! But really, why isnt 21st century breakdown on his top 10 ://

  2. redgie says:

    i love your pick for #1! 🙂

  3. Daniel says:

Thrice, Chevelle, Alice in Chains, and Them Crooked Vultures all had amazing albums this year.

Yes, I’m sure all you think of Thrice is a pool.

  4. Alfred says:

I agree that Jay-Z had one of the best of 2009, but I don’t agree with your comment. K’Naan’s “Wavin’ Flag”, “Somalia”, “Fatima”, and “Take a Minute” off of “Troubadour” top “D.O.A.” or “Run This Town” or any other track in Jay-Z’s “Blueprint III”

  5. Rodrigo says:

    AFI should be the first.
Crash Love is better than a lot of these winners and i never have heard about a lot of bands in that list

    1. dw says:

Agreed. and he DID forget green days 21st century breakdown! that album is AWESOME

  6. Shannon says:

AFI! Crash love was a fantastic CD. It gets better every time I play it. Great job putting it on your list! They don’t get nearly enough credit.

    WOW! Great list Bean!

Though iffy on A.F.I., they shouldn’t be on the list…

  10. Jen says:

Surprised you didn’t put Silversun Pickups on your list, you touted that album pretty loudly during the year. Your pick of White Lies has convinced me to get the album, I had been on the fence, but love the single of To Lose My Life. Thanks for recognizing Muse also, the best band out today. Surprised about AFI, I was disappointed in Crash Love, I’ll have to give it more play to see if it improves as you say.

  11. Gman says:

Crash Love was my disappointment of the year, I had so many expectations for that album… oh the shame!!!

  12. Tiffany says:

its great to see White Lies get the recognition they deserve. I first heard them at Weenie Roast and every song they played rocked so I knew I had to get the album. Oh and go Muse. Oh and people don’t forget music is subjective

  13. Sung says:

“Dear Agony” by Breaking Benjamin is my favorite 2009 album.

  14. rae. says:

    this was a great list.
    (minus afi, sorry)
‘dark was the night’ compilation, just about kills me everytime.
it’s a shame the majority of them aren’t played on the radio.

  15. Rose bowl 101 says:

    Sounds of the universe

I have both crash love and the resistance

    Good choices.
